And when it comes to relationships, what happens between couples in bedrooms often reveals the strength (or weakness) of the bond. In bed is where intimacy happens \u2013 both physical and emotional. That said, myths still persist around the connection between sleep and love.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time to shine a light on those outdated concepts and dispel them, thanks to leading experts.<\/p>\n<h3>Myth #1: Sleeping in separate bed(rooms) is a sign your relationship is in trouble<\/h3>\n<p>About 25% of American couples sleep in separate beds, according a story in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/02\/09\/separate-beds-married-couples-can-help-relationship-experts-say\/4657215002\/\">USA Today<\/a>. There are many reasons behind these so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/battle-sexes-men-women-better-bed-847653\">sleep divorces<\/a>,\u201d but few of them are indicators that a relationship is unhealthy. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the biggest myths about love and sleep,\u201d says Jessica Alderson, a relationship expert and co-founder of dating app, So Syncd. \u201cThis absolutely isn&#8217;t true. Getting a good night&#8217;s sleep is essential for both short and long-term happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sleeping separately makes sense for many twosomes. For example, they may have conflicting schedules, one working 9-5 and the other pulling regular nightshifts. It isn\u2019t ideal for anyone to be woken in the middle of their night\u2019s sleep. \u201cOther reasons include things like having a partner who is a wriggler or simply just wanting your own space,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<h3>Myth #2: Spooning is the best sleep position for couples<\/h3>\n<p>Not necessarily. According to one UK study, an estimated 30% of couples spend at least part of the night spooning, but it\u2019s not ideal for all. \u201cEveryone is different and just like there is no one-size-fits-all for a partner, there isn&#8217;t a one-size-fits-all for sleeping positions either,\u201d says Alderson. \u201cJust do what feels right for you as a couple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just ask a woman experiencing the fluctuations in body temperature that come with menopause how she feels about spooning with a male partner while she sleeps. Men tend to sleep hotter because they have a higher rate of muscle, which tends to generate more heat than fat. Likely she won\u2019t be happy about it and will experience disrupted sleep, due to feeling overheated.<\/p>\n<h3>Myth #3 (maybe): Sex helps you sleep better<\/h3>\n<p>Experts seem split on this issue. \u201cThere is not enough evidence to suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/wear-socks-bed-67832\">sex makes you sleepy<\/a>, and for some people it can do just the opposite,\u201d says Alexander Burgemeester, a licensed psychologist who specializes in relationships. \u201cWhether or not sex helps you to fall asleep faster is very much dependent on the individual and on other environmental factors. Having sex with the goal of trying to fall asleep faster is probably not the best idea, as there are lots of things that can contribute to this. Sex can lead to relief from stress and cause relaxation for some people, but others may feel overly stimulated and wide awake after sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21880\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep.png\" alt=\"5 Sleep &amp; Love Myths Hurting Your Relationship\" width=\"325\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep.png 800w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-700x700.png 700w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-350x350.png 350w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/9-souple-sleep-96x96.png 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rachel Sommer, a clinical sexologist and founder of the website, My Sex Toy Guide, has a more positive view. \u201cNumerous studies have shown that having <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/6-scientific-reasons-sleep-naked-7832\">sex before napping<\/a> can help you sleep better,\u201d she says. \u201cBesides the feel-good effect an orgasm has, the body releases oxytocin and prolactin \u2013 two hormones associated with relaxation and pleasant feeling.\u201d For this reason, having sex or self-pleasure before bedtime has a similar effect, leading to pleasant, relaxing feelings. She notes that sex reduces the level of cortisol and other stress hormones, thus improving the possibility of having a good night&#8217;s sleep.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line here is how sex makes you and partner feel about its role in sleep. Work out the right timing so both of you can get the sleep needed. For those who find physical intimacy gives them an energy boost, consider scheduling an earlier bedtime or plan for the morning or weekend naps.<\/p>\n<h3>Myth #4: Don\u2019t go to bed angry<\/h3>\n<p>In an ideal world, we wouldn\u2019t slip into bed with our loved one and feel anger, but tidy resolutions at bedtime aren\u2019t always realistic. \u201cIt might be better to sleep on it and wake up to solve with a fresh mind,\u201d says Charlotte Cremers, a sleep expert and general practitioner. \u201cForcing matters may end up causing fights all night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, consider that when you\u2019re headed to bed, you\u2019re ready to wind down for the day and your circadian rhythms will be telling you that it\u2019s time to sleep. If you\u2019re tired, having a discussion where opinions may differ won\u2019t be helpful or lead to resolution. We all know what it\u2019s like to feel tired and cranky. It\u2019s not a combination that\u2019s conducive to talking about important issues. It may make couples more likely to say hurtful things that will be like pouring gasoline on an already fiery situation.<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Sherrell, a licensed therapist and relationship expert for Decoding Couples in Los Angeles, says that \u00abdon&#8217;t go to sleep angry\u00bb is an outdated method or thought process. \u201cWe know that during a conflict, one or both parties is dysregulated from it,\u201d she says. \u201cContinuing to push through that to try to \u00absolve\u00bb something isn&#8217;t healthy and it isn&#8217;t going to work.\u201d A more effective strategy is to take breaks. \u201cComing back to a disagreement when both parties are regulated is one of the healthiest things a couple can do for healthy conflict resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Myth #5: Morning larks and night owls can\u2019t get along (in bed)<\/h3>\n<p>Can there be peace when one partner prefers to stay up later, while the other subscribes to an \u201cearly to bed, early to rise\u201d philosophy? Absolutely. While differing sleep schedules might be a source of conflict, couples can work through those differences. Maybe it\u2019s solutions, like sleeping in separate beds or having some <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/want-happier-blissful-relationship-better-sex-sleep-answer\">cuddle time together<\/a> \u2013 good for getting that feel-good oxytocin hormone flowing \u2013 before the night owl goes off to read or stream their favorite TV shows.<\/p>\n<p>Because, as we\u2019ve learned earlier, not sleeping in the same place doesn\u2019t mean there is trouble in paradise.
