Anxiety has become the number one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anxietycentre.com\/anxiety-statistics-information.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health issue<\/a> in North America, affecting approximately 40 million Americans (18% of adults). Some estimates put this number higher at around 30% since many people with anxiety don\u2019t know they have it or don\u2019t seek treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, it\u2019s a national epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to sleep, anxiety is a key part of a toxic cycle because it makes getting to sleep and staying asleep difficult. What\u2019s more, it becomes a source of worry itself, worsening the original anxiety \u2013 a chicken-and-egg problem. Did the anxiety cause poor sleep or did poor sleep cause anxiety? One feeds the other, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsomnia is often co-morbid with anxiety and depression,\u201d explains Elika Kormeili, a Los Angeles-based licensed therapist specializing in online counseling for anxiety and insomnia and founder of the Center for Healthy and Happy Living. \u201cThis means they often occur together. She cites the example of a stressed-out couple she counseled who began to <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/yoga-sleep\">meditate together<\/a> for 30 minutes each evening. They not only slept more deeply but also felt closer to one another.
