With a renewed commitment to getting and staying healthier this year, we&#8217;re focused on getting better sleep too \u2013 the foundation of a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Drew and Jonathan, HGTV\u2019s Property Brothers and founders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottlivinghome.com\/\">Scott Living<\/a>, have some good ideas to help you refresh your <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-coronavirus-pandemic-687161\">healthy habits<\/a>, a strong mindset and smart, achievable goals.<\/p>\n<h3>7 steps to a happier YOU in this year<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. Get in the groove and move with more exercise. <\/strong>Not in the habit yet? That\u2019s okay. As Drew says, \u201cPlay basketball with some friends, take your dog on a walk&#8230;anything counts!\u201d Just getting started is a good first step and you\u2019ll find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/articles\/exercise-affects-sleep\/\">you sleep better when you get moving<\/a>. It\u2019s okay if you\u2019re not a fan of exercise, but it\u2019s good to find something you enjoy. After all, as Jonathan points out, we\u2019ve all got different interests: \u201cI know we don\u2019t all love exercise the way Drew does. That would be super annoying. But getting your heart rate up really does wonders for your energy level\u2014and it\u2019s good for you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Volunteer and give a helping hand to others. <\/strong>\u201cIt feels really good to get out and help others in your community,\u201d says Drew. That great feeling isn\u2019t the only benefit of volunteering. It can actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/volunteering-may-be-good-for-body-and-mind-201306266428\">reduce stress and lower blood pressure<\/a>, especially with activities that get your heart rate up. Whatever you choose, take a page out of Jonathan\u2019s book, \u201cFind a cause you love and figure out how to get involved. You\u2019ll be all the happier for it.\u201d Because, let\u2019s be honest, there are few things in life that are more satisfying than knowing you\u2019ve helped someone else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Say goodbye to clutter and welcome the calm in. <\/strong>Each new year comes with new resolve to make positive, lasting changes\u2014and it often includes making decisions about what gets to stay and what has to go. As Drew puts it, \u201cNow is a great time to do a major purge. Pick a different room to go through for each week of the month and reassess what you have and what you actually need. Donate or toss anything that isn\u2019t going to work for you in the new year.\u201d You might want to start with your bedroom. Take back your lunch break. <\/strong>In today\u2019s fast-paced world, people are rewarded for being productive contributors. But working harder and longer doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re more productive. Jonathan says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/ca\/blog\/changepower\/201704\/how-do-work-breaks-help-your-brain-5-surprising-answers\">Taking breaks is just as important as working hard!<\/a> You\u2019re no good if you\u2019re burned out and stressed\u2014believe us, we\u2019ve been there.\u201d Whether you go for a walk, read a book, or chat with a friend, getting away from your work for a short time every day can restore your motivation, increase productivity and reduce stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Craft a consistent sleep routine that works for you. <\/strong>We tend to like to work hard and play hard but, with fixed work hours, it\u2019s easy for downtime to slowly creep into \u2013 and overtake \u2013 sleep time. But sleep is too important to skimp on and being consistent is key. That consistency starts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/articles\/design-perfect-bedtime-routine\/\">keeping a healthy sleep schedule<\/a>. \u201cCreating a special bedtime routine can help give you a reason to look forward to going to bed,\u201d advises Drew. \u201cThat is if just getting a good night\u2019s sleep isn\u2019t something to get excited about on its own!\u201d adds Jonathan. Make sleep a daily priority for your general health and happiness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Give your brain a workout and learn something new. <\/strong>If last year taught us anything it&#8217;s how important it is to <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/practice-self-care-social-distancing-self-isolating-964873\">keep your brain engaged<\/a> and stay physically active. Making time to learn new skills gives your brain a boost that can improve memory and even slow cognitive aging\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/neuroscience-brain-based-learning-neuroplasticity\">it actually changes your brain<\/a>! \u201cI love, love, love taking lessons and learning new things. And don\u2019t be afraid to really go all-in if you find something you enjoy\u2014hobbies are a great way to decompress and unwind, while keeping your mind (and maybe body) active!\u201d says Drew. Commit to lifelong learning to sharpen and strengthen your brain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Connect with people more and screens less. <\/strong>Technology can be fun and it allows us to do things we couldn\u2019t even imagine not too very long ago. But, as Jonathan points out, \u201cBeing present with the people you care about is a good habit to develop. Heck, being present even with people you don\u2019t know is important, too! Put away your phones and tablets and enjoy the company\u2014you\u2019ll likely find yourself feeling happier and recharged.\u201d As a bonus, resisting the pull of screen time can minimize the disruption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/articles\/ways-technology-affects-sleep\/\">your natural sleep\/wake cycle<\/a>, making it easier to get the rest you need so you maintain good mental and physical health.<\/p>\n<h2>Rest well &amp; wake up ready to go!<\/h2>\n<p>Better sleep gives rise to better mornings, bringing your goals into focus and dreams within reach.
