We understand what it\u2019s like to fall into the latest digital rabbit hole. Whether it\u2019s Netflix, TikTok Instagram or good old Pinterest \u2013 so much entertaining content at your fingertips can draw you in for much longer than you anticipated. Where did that last hour go? But let\u2019s face facts. Your digital habits are not only affecting your sleep; they\u2019re, they\u2019re killing it. Of course along with all the rest-inhibiting habits that come along with our hamster-wheel 21st century lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Our busy lives and online activity (and their effect on sleep) have caught the attention of researchers who are discovering that putting off sleep to do other things (name it: <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/revenge-bedtime-procrastination-073672\">sleep procrastination<\/a>) is a real thing. Studies conducted at Utrecht University in the Netherlands show this delay may be more harmful and more widespread than previously believed.<\/p>\n<h2>The harmful effects of procrastination on your sleep<\/h2>\n<p>In case you didn\u2019t know, procrastination is defined as the voluntary delay of an intended course of action, despite expecting to be worse off for the delay. It causes us to do things like putting off the laundry until we have a mountain of dirty clothes and nothing to wear to work tomorrow. While we can navigate our way around most of the tasks we\u2019ve left undone, it\u2019s a lot harder to get past a lack of sleep. A mountain of research points out the myriad of health problems \u2013 physical and psychological \u2013 that come with being a culture notoriously sleep-deprived.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are some of the health problems that go part in parcel with not getting enough sleep? We already know that alertness, work performance, mental health and weight can be impacted. But there can be more serious \u2013 and surprising \u2013 side effects too. And some of those are gender related.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21629 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"social media sleep procrastination\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-350x350.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-100x100.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed-96x96.jpeg 96w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-tech-in-bed.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Cancer.<\/strong>\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/11\/161104102016.htm\">research<\/a>\u00a0by scientists at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, looked at men who worked night shift for 20 years to see if there was any correlation between their disrupted sleep and disease. Data collected suggested a 27% increase in their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/live-longer-healthy\">risk of cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fertility.<\/strong> For couples looking to start or grow their family, poor sleep might derail those plans \u2013 on the man\u2019s side at least. Getting too much or too little sleep decreases a male partner\u2019s fertility by as much as 42%, according to data from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Guys should get 8 hours per night to improve odds of impregnating their partner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heart Disease.<\/strong> Getting less than 8 hours of sleep elevated women\u2019s risk for heart problems.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/releases\/156100.php\">Research<\/a>\u00a0has shown higher levels of C-reactive protein, a predictor of future cardiovascular death. Men were affected, too, but at a significantly lower rate.<\/p>\n<h2>Is social media induced procrastination the only thing affecting our sleep?<\/h2>\n<p>The quick answer is no. Lots of things impact sleep, from exercise, and diet to life situation and gender.<\/p>\n<p>We conducted a National Sleep Survey to help us learn more about how sleep trends are changing. The results from more than 1,000 responses were a little surprising. The fact that men and women are different isn\u2019t news. But what might be surprising is the many ways that their sleep behaviors vary from one another.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, 38% of women report feeling like they don\u2019t get enough sleep compared to only 20% of men. But when it comes to who does better with a shortage of rest, the nod goes to the ladies, according to a study by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2011\/06\/110615015650.htm\">American Academy of Sleep Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who sleeps more \u2013 men or women?<\/strong>\u00a0Colin Lawlor, CEO of\u00a0SleepsScore Labs,\u00a0based in Carlsbad, CA has the answer. His company has collected close to 2 million nights of sleep data. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve found is that men and women have different opinions regarding the quality of their sleep,\u201d he says. \u201cFor instance, on average women sleep about 24 minutes longer than men. However, women tend to think they have more sleep issues than men \u2013 77% of women versus 71% of men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21660 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-300x300.png\" alt=\"Who sleeps more \u2013 men or women?\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-700x700.png 700w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-350x350.png 350w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/4-thurs.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>What\u2019s that ruckus? Snoring alert!\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/qa\/do-more-men-snore-women\">Twice as many men than women snore<\/a>. But don\u2019t be too tough on the guys because they can\u2019t help it. Blame their biology. The space behind the tongue, called the oropharynx, is larger in those born male. The tongue relaxes during sleep and can fall into that space, causing a breathing obstruction, apnea and snoring.<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, though sleep apnea is more common with men, rates jump among women after the age of 50, while remaining steady for the lads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who ate the leftovers?\u00a0<\/strong>Nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder (NS-RED) is a kind of sleepwalking that causes people to eat during the night while they appear asleep. Those with the condition \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/eat.2260150405\">more likely to be women<\/a> (66%) \u2013 cannot remember being in the kitchen and filling their bellies. It\u2019s thought to be caused by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-doctor\">apnea and medications<\/a>\u00a0used to treat insomnia or depression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pass the remote. Who\u2019s more likely to be up watching late-night TV?\u00a0<\/strong>According to the 2002 National Sleep Foundation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sleep-topics\/women-and-sleep\">poll<\/a>, women are more likely than men to report insomnia \u2013 63% said at least a few nights a week. With men, it was 54%.<\/p>\n<p>Why can\u2019t she sleep? Hormones are certainly a key factor, but 1 in 4 women reported pain \u2013 due to migraines, tension headaches, arthritis, and heartburn \u2013 as a factor. Just 48% of the male respondents cited nighttime pain as a factor for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/george-michael-prince-high-cost-sleep-deprivation\">sleeplessness<\/a>, compared to 58% among middle-aged women.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21630 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"social media sleep procrastination\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-350x350.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-100x100.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed-96x96.jpeg 96w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sleep-procrastination-family-bed.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>How does having children impact sleep?\u00a0<\/strong>Children in the home impact sleep differently for men and women, according to Lawlor. For men, a family with none or 1 child doesn\u2019t impact their sleep, but women can snooze through the night with up to 3 kids. When you get to four or more kids, both parents have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/7-surprising-side-effects-sleep-deprivation\">sleep problems<\/a>. \u201cSurprisingly, men sleep less when there are 4 kids in the household; women lose 25 minutes a night, while men lose 45 minutes,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>However, findings from another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/scienceofus\/2017\/02\/having-kids-affects-how-much-women-sleep-but-not-men-study.html%20http:\/nymag.com\/scienceofus\/2017\/02\/having-kids-affects-how-much-women-sleep-but-not-men-study.html\">2017 study<\/a>\u00a0said otherwise. The American Academy of Neurology and Georgia State University determined women who live in the house with children get less sleep than those who had none. In fact, moms (aged 45 and younger) with kids reported feeling tired 14 nights each month, while childless women said 11. Surprisingly, for men \u2013 with or without kids \u2013 sleep was not impacted.<\/p>\n<h2>5 tips to help you get the rest you need \u2013 without any sleep procrastinating<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make bedtime spa time<\/strong>.\u00a0Sleep spas are a hot trend among spa-goers desperate to get rest and to learn how to tame their bad, sleep-wrecking habits. These facilities are a good way to reset bedtime rituals, forcing a slowdown and treating sleep as an important pillar of health.
