There\u2019s a whole lot of fun days ahead \u2013 and we want those days to be as healthy as possible for you and your family. When it comes to travel, sleep is often the first sacrifice, which can negatively impact your immune system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just a few adjustments to your daily (and nightly) habits will set the holidays <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">\u2013 and your travels \u2013 on a path for success<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to relax (and possibly sleep) better at the airport<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to sleep and travel, space is a luxury \u2013 and a necessity. While the price of first-class may be out of reach, there\u2019s a lot to be said for finding a place to stretch out.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Secure your stuff<\/strong>. Feeling safe is priority number one for sleep. If there\u2019s a place to lock your belongings, use it. If not, make sure your money, credit cards, and passport are tucked inside your shirt where it would be hard for someone to remove without waking you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stretch it out.<\/strong> If you\u2019re flight\u2019s delayed, chances are you aren\u2019t relaxed. Try some yoga or simple stretches to elongate your spine and release the tension. If it helps, put on your headphones and let your favorite tunes relax you while you stretch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change your clothes. <\/strong>Slip into loose clothing that will allow you to move freely (and make it easier to nap). You might <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/can-temperature-affect-how-you-sleep-5736\">sleep hot<\/a> at home, but long pants, a sweater, and socks will keep you warm in a cool airport.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make a pillow.<\/strong> Your head needs a soft place to rest so roll up a jacket or scarf. Of course, you\u2019ll want to wipe down the chair before laying down on it. If you\u2019re going west to east, expect jet lag to be worse. But there are non-medicinal ways to reduce sleep disruption. Start by pushing back <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/how-much-sleep-do-you-really-need\">your bedtime<\/a> about 6 days before you leave \u2013 just 15 minutes will do it. Then 3 days out, push it back \u00bd hour.<\/p>\n<p>When you board the plane, adjust your watch, laptop, and cellphone and start living the new time zone right away.<\/p>\n<p>While in the air:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Try not to nap<\/strong>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/the-art-of-napping\">nap <\/a>can thwart your body\u2019s need for a longer sleep that night. If you must sleep, limit yourself to 25 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay hydrated with water.<\/strong> Not <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es?p=28437\">coffee<\/a>, alcoholic beverages or soda drinks. Arriving dehydrated will make you feel lousy and it will also make it hard for your body to adjust to the new rhythm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you must nap when you arrive.<\/strong> Limit your nap to 90 minutes, long enough to recharge the batteries but not so long you won\u2019t be able to sleep later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Travel accessories that double as sleep aides<\/h2>\n<p>For most of us, there\u2019s no place like home when it comes to getting a good night\u2019s sleep and there\u2019s no denying airplane seats are the polar opposite of comfortable. Add in the noise from other passengers or announcements and getting sleep on a plane feels like a herculean task. Talk about a recipe for grumpy!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17440\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-iss_15253_00394.jpg\" alt=\"How to Sleep Better when You Travel\" width=\"150\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-iss_15253_00394.jpg 400w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-iss_15253_00394-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-iss_15253_00394-289x400.jpg 289w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-iss_15253_00394-150x207.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Packing a few sleep accessories can relieve some of the nightmares of airplane travel and ensure you arrive well-rested and ready for your vacation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wear warm socks.<\/strong> Planes can be ridiculously hot or cold \u2013 but never in between. Pack or wear socks that will keep you warm (or can be removed to help you cool down).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silk sleeping bag liner. <\/strong>Most planes aren\u2019t equipped with blankets. A sleeping bag liner is (basically) a human-sized pillowcase. They\u2019re washable, durable and, as an added bonus, they\u2019re a sign that you\u2019re on a serious mission to sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eye mask. <\/strong>Even if you don\u2019t sleep with an eye mask at home, pack one for travel. The lack of light on your eyelids will help you relax into a deeper sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noise canceling headphones.<\/strong> From fellow passengers talking too loudly to flight attendants passing out drinks to random announcements, planes are noisy. Pack a pair of noise-canceling headphones and head to your sleep zone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Neck pillow. <\/strong>This is a must-have in our books. Carrying a pillow through the airport might make you feel like a kid on the way to summer camp but this little bundle of squish can make ANY trip bearable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reusable water bottle.<\/strong> Remember when they allowed liquids through airport security and we weren\u2019t required to purchase a $4 bottle of water in addition to our $5.50 double mocha frappuccino extra whip? Stash an empty bottle in your carry on, prance through security and head for the nearest water fountain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vaseline.<\/strong> This carry-on won\u2019t help you sleep but it will keep you healthy. Flight attendants use this trick to stay healthy: dab a little on the inside of your nostrils to keep out germs that hang out in planes. It\u2019s good for your lips too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Reserve rest &amp; relaxation at your hotel<\/h2>\n<p>If a quiet night is a priority for you when you travel, speak up when booking your room. You\u2019re the expert on what helps you relax and get the sleep you need. If you\u2019re going to Vegas, skip to the next section \u2013 you <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/why-cant-i-sleep\">won\u2019t be sleeping<\/a> anyway\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17438\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door.jpg\" alt=\"How to Sleep Better when You Travel\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door.jpg 800w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-768x877.jpg 768w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-613x700.jpg 613w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-350x400.jpg 350w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-600x686.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/25-hotel-door-150x171.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Ask for a quiet room. <\/strong>Request a room away from the elevator, stairs and ice machine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t follow the sun. <\/strong>If you\u2019re crossing time zones, request a room on the west side of the hotel to avoid a sunrise wake-up call.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Update your profile online. <\/strong>Some chains allow priority customers to enter personal information that will help the hotel serve you better when you arrive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pack a sleep kit.<\/strong> Eyeshades, meditation music, aromatherapy sprays (lavender or chamomile) and a night light so you don\u2019t wake yourself up fully if you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Your home away from home, <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-spa\">sleep spa<\/a>\u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try a bedtime shower or bath<\/strong>. Studies show that raising the body temperature (with hot water) and lowering it quickly (with room temperature air) an hour before bed relaxes your muscles and prepares your body for sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clip the drapes shut<\/strong>. Furnace and air vents are often directly below the curtains. Clipping them prevents them from separating during the night and letting the early morning sun in.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check the thermostat<\/strong>. Sleep can be disrupted if the room is warmer than 65\u00b0 F or colder than 54\u00b0 F.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check the clock. <\/strong>The alarm may still be set from the last guest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rest well &amp; wake up ready to go!<\/h2>\n<p>Better sleep gives rise to better mornings, bringing your goals into focus and dreams within reach.
