Snickers, Butterfingers, Reese\u2019s, what\u2019s not to love?<\/p>\n<h2>But how does all the sugar after your kids\u2019 sleep \u2013 and yours?<\/h2>\n<p>Eating sugar causes a rapid increase in blood\u00a0glucose\u00a0levels, forcing your pancreas to pump out insulin in an effort to equalize things. If everything\u2019s working as it should, your blood sugar drops. But you\u2019ll pay the price with possible sudden headaches, irritability, increased heart rate, along with fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to sugar before bed, you can imagine that with your pancreas working overtime, sleep is going to be challenging. The rollercoaster ride of blood sugars increasing and decreasing quickly will make it hard to fall asleep \u2013 and stay asleep.<\/p>\n<p>The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 100 calories per day of refined sugar for women (the equivalent of 10 jelly beans) and 150 calories for men (equal to 15 jelly beans).<\/p>\n<p>On average, Americans consume more than five times the recommended sugar on a daily basis \u2013 never mind a special holiday like Halloween.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16106\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-1001x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Will Halloween Candy Wreck My Sleep \u2013 and My Kid's Sleep?\" width=\"400\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-1001x1024.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-768x785.jpg 768w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-685x700.jpg 685w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-391x400.jpg 391w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-600x614.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2-150x153.jpg 150w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/31-halloween-candy-body-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>But if too big of a snack can interrupt your sleep, too little can cause gnawing hunger pains that will wake you up in the middle of the night. \u201cI recommend limiting yourself and children to one to three bit-sized candy bars after the night\u2019s festivities,\u201d says Ranine Carter, a registered dietitian from at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plushbeds.com\/blog\/sleep-science\/trick-or-treat-why-halloween-candy-and-sleep-dont-mix\/\">Children\u2019s Hospital of Alabama<\/a>. Ranine also advises giving the kids a light, <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/low-calorie-bedtime-snack-recipes-9641\">healthy snack<\/a> before allowing the candy treat, just to balance things out a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Just remember, the mountains of candy don\u2019t need to be consumed quickly \u2013 or even by you and your kids.
