How many hours of sleep do you need to feel smart? Ever slept on it and woken up with a smart solution to your challenge?<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe that our brains use sleep to sort and clean \u2013 like how nightshift crew at Target cleans up after a busy selling day. The aisles are tidied, everything\u2019s put away and the overflow is moved to the backroom. When we don\u2019t get the sleep we need to do this sorting, our messy brains actually start to fall apart, as seen through brain imaging technologies.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you sleep (and maybe a new mattress) make you smarter? If being smart is tied to better sleep, quality and quantity is tied directly to your mattress. A 2011\u00a0survey of 1,500 Americans found that 92% of us feel a comfortable mattress is very important to a good night\u2019s sleep. And yet so many people climb into a bed that\u2019s more of a torture device than a soothing sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t get into a car without brakes, right? You wouldn\u2019t tolerate a fridge that couldn\u2019t keep food cool, right? But night after night, many of us climb into a bed that\u2019s not only killing our chance of a good night\u2019s sleep \u2013 it\u2019s actually making us stupid.<\/p>\n<h2>If your mattress has seen better nights, we\u2019ve found 5 benefits of sleeping on a new mattress<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. A new mattress can reduce stress. <\/strong>In a 2009 study, men and women slept for 28 consecutive nights on their regular mattresses, then another 28 nights on new, medium-firm mattresses. They were asked to evaluate their stress levels based on factors like worrying, racing thoughts, nervousness, irritability, headaches, trembling and more. The new beds resulted in \u201ca significant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/stress-sleep-better\">decrease in stress<\/a>,\u201d according to the study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/mattress-sleep-health_n_4740435\">HuffPost.com<\/a>. Researchers think the affect the mattress had on sleep quality because of a \u201cdecrease in pain associated with the firmer setup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. A new mattress can soothe a hurting back<\/strong>. Sore and aching backs send more people to doctors than any other single complaint and the busier we get, the more we suffer. Sitting all day at a desk or standing in heels wreaks havoc on <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/best-mattress-bad-back-2098\">spinal alignment<\/a> and sadly, we often don\u2019t exercise enough to undo that damage. Sleep can help heal the abuse we throw at our backs but most of us don\u2019t sleep on a supportive enough mattress to get the job done. And when we don\u2019t give our backs the rest they need, mornings can be painful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. A new mattress can help you lose weight<\/strong>. While you weren\u2019t sleeping, your body cooked up a\u00a0perfect <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-weight-gain-4850\">recipe\u00a0for weight gain<\/a>. Skimping on sleep sets your brain up to make bad decisions. It dulls activity in the brain\u2019s frontal lobe, the locus of decision-making and impulse control. So it\u2019s a little like being drunk \u2013 you simply don\u2019t have the mental clarity to make good decisions. When you\u2019re short on sleep, it\u2019s easy to lean on a large latte to get moving. Lack of sleep can start before depression, be a symptom of depression, and make depression worse. \u201cDepression and sleep are closely related,\u201d says Prashant Gajwani, MD, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hs\/major-depression\/depression-and-sleep-the-right-amount\/\">EveryDayHealth.com<\/a>. \u201cDepression is a brain illness, and it affects many types of brain functions, including the sleep-wake cycle. Once this biologic clock has been disturbed, it can make sleep even more irregular and that adds to the depression.
