We\u2019re built to be able to move and think and experience the world around us in a variety of different ways. From smarts to sports and everything in between, we see stories of people who are bringing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/kevin-j-ryan\/greatest-inventions-decade-2010-2019.html\">new inventions to the world<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sport360.com\/article\/other\/athletics\/340967\/katie-ledecky-simone-biles-and-other-athletes-set-to-light-up-the-tokyo-2020-olympics\">performing incredible physical feats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s one thing we all have in common. Whether you\u2019re making news or not, you need adequate sleep \u2013 both quality and quantity.<\/p>\n<h2>Just how much sleep do you really need?<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard the recommendation that the average adult needs 8 hours of sleep each night to enjoy optimal health. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/articles\/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need\">research has shown<\/a> adults aged 18-64 years actually need 7-9 hours each night. For some, 8 hours may not be quite enough, while for others it\u2019s just too much. According to the National Sleep Foundation, you\u2019ll find your sweet spot \u201cby assessing your own individual needs and habits and learning how you respond to different amounts of sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t been paying attention to your sleep habits, you may be suffering from a sleep debt. Common signs that your sleep bank account is in arrears is fatigue, lack of focus, increased appetite and weight gain. Quite simply, depriving yourself of the sleep you need can seriously <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-deprivation-impacts-health-5837\">impact your long and short-term health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We know it\u2019s tempting to fit in a few more things by going to bed later or getting up earlier. Or to watch just one more episode of your favorite show on Netflix. According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/features\/toll-of-sleep-loss-in-america\">WebMD<\/a>, \u201cFor most people, getting less than six hours sleep translates into a bigger sleep debt than they may realize. Over a two-week period, missing out on the recommended 8 hours of nightly sleep adds up to two full nights\u2019 sleep debt, one study found. If you\u2019re averaging only four hours a night, your brain reacts as though you haven\u2019t slept at all for three consecutive nights.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Sleep isn\u2019t a break \u2013 it\u2019s active recovery for your brain and body<\/h2>\n<p>During sleep, our brains sort and store memories from the day, making room for new experiences heading our way tomorrow. Think of sleep as the clean-up crew for the pathways in the brain. When we don\u2019t get the sleep we need our brains start to look like Walmart toy aisles after Black Friday. Forgetting where you put your glasses today is nothing compared to what your future brain will forget.<\/p>\n<p>In our always-on world, making time to rest and rejuvenate is essential to keep up with the demands of our busy lives. We\u2019re more productive (and healthier) when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/minda-zetlin\/productivity-workday-52-minutes-work-17-minutes-break-travis-bradberry-pomodoro-technique.html\">get breaks throughout the day<\/a> \u2013 and the most important break should take up roughly a third of every 24 hours. Sleep is so important that athletes and sports teams are beginning to include sleep coaching as part of their overall training regimen and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamesayles\/2019\/12\/11\/sleep-geek-aims-to-keep-pioneering-after-successful-football-partnership\/#4cdd8f0b4660\">improving player performance<\/a>. A recent study of the Stanford men\u2019s college basketball team showed that extra time sleeping translated into running faster sprints, improved free throws and improved memory when learning new techniques.<\/p>\n<h2>Get started on a winning sleep routine<\/h2>\n<p>If sleep can make a difference in <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/sleep-athletic-performance\/\">athletic performance<\/a> for pro-athletes, there\u2019s no doubt we can all enjoy similar benefits. Sure, not everyone has the same physical demands, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/top-15-better-sleep-tips\/\">practice of prioritizing sleep<\/a> is the same. The pro-athlete and you are more similar that you think.<\/p>\n<p>Many of us participate in non-professional athletic events weekly, whether at the gym or a pickup game of kickball with friends or chasing a toddler around the house. While you probably don\u2019t train as hard as Lebron or Serena Williams, you might be shocked to hear they both sleep an average of 10 hours each night. But it makes sense. Keep it as sacred as possible, within reason. Because life happens, and sometimes you have to go with the flow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set yourself up for successful sleep.<\/strong> Your bedroom needs to be a space <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/bed-you-will-love-to-sleep-in-3927\">you want to sleep in<\/a>. It needs to be comfortable and relaxing \u2013 and so does your mattress. Design the space and choose a mattress that supports the quantity and quality sleep you need.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commit to a morning routine.<\/strong> And make sure it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/sleep-newzzz\/201907\/reasons-skip-the-snooze-button\">doesn\u2019t include the snooze button<\/a>. It\u2019s tempting to sneak 10 more minutes of sleep, but those last 10 minutes aren\u2019t good quality and won\u2019t help you feel more awake.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take care when you eat and drink before bed.<\/strong> Food, alcohol and\/or caffeine before bed can disrupt your ability fall and stay asleep. <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/coffee-caffeine-sleep-12858\">Caffeine is best consumed during the morning<\/a> and if you plan to indulge in adult drinks in the evening, allow for a few hours to digest alcohol and food before going to bed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get moving for better rest.<\/strong> Just as sleep can improve athletic performance, exercise can improve sleep. But you don\u2019t need to be an athlete to reap these rewards. Just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/exercising-for-better-sleep\">30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise<\/a> daily will give your heart a boost and help you repay that sleep debt. Like with food and alcohol, try to exercise earlier in the day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid blue light exposure before bed.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/blue-light-has-a-dark-side\">Blue light emitted from tablets and mobile phones<\/a> has a powerful impact on your body\u2019s ability to secrete melatonin, the hormone you need to regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Read a book by lamplight or meditate instead.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Everyone deserves to feel rested and energized every day.
