A study published by medical journal <em>Sleep<\/em> in an article entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1978403\/\"><em>Sleep and the Developing Brain<\/em><\/a> stated: \u201cThe most fundamental requirement for healthy growth and development in young children include: loving support and protection by parents\/caretakers, adequate nutrition and adequate sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the BSC, these are the critical signs to watch for in sleep-deprived children:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Falling asleep often and quickly, for instance, in the car<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Trouble waking a child for school on a regular basis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleeping in on the weekends by several hours<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Yawning<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubbing eyes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Irritability<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Problems in school, including concentration and behavior issues<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A child\u2019s mood can speak volumes about their general wellbeing and provide important clues to sleep quality. Frequent bouts of whining, crying, tantrums and an inability to handle stress are important indicators, too.<\/p>\n<p>Children might be short on sleep because of an overly busy schedule or an untreated sleep disorder. The rule of thumb is to consider sleep a \u201cvital sign\u201d \u2013 so basic and fundamental to our health, wellbeing, and quality of life that it should be addressed at all healthcare visits.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should be on the lookout for signs such as irritability, trouble falling asleep, waking up at night, having trouble breathing during sleep, loud or heavy breathing or snoring while sleeping, problems in daytime behavior, or <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/kids-sleep-school-34356\">falling asleep at school<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your child has trouble sleeping, talk to your child\u2019s pediatrician,\u201d suggests Cralle. \u201cAny sleep issues including irritability, trouble falling asleep, waking up at night, having trouble breathing during sleep, and loud or heavy breathing or snoring while sleeping, problems in daytime behavior, falling asleep at school should be brought to the attention of your child\u2019s healthcare provider.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>More news about sleep and a child\u2019s behavior<\/h2>\n<p>Insufficient sleep in children is associated with a higher incidence of behavioral problems. Kids who aren\u2019t well-rested often have trouble getting along with others. They\u2019re more likely to have mood swings, struggle with concentrating, feel stressed and experience a lack of motivation. Poor sleep in school-age children might result in hyperactivity and poor academic performance. Routine and consistency are the keys. A regular bedtime strengthens circadian rhythms and helps ensure adequate time for sleep. \u201cKids will learn what to expect and bedtime will become a non-negotiable part of the day,\u201d explains Cralle. \u201cA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/10-ways-better-night-sleep\">regular bedtime<\/a> also fosters healthy, independent sleep in children.\u201d Begin those patterns early on. In one study, children without consistent bedtimes at age 3 had lower test scores in reading, math and spatial awareness at age 7 than children with regular bedtimes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Always put going to bed \u2013 and sleep in general \u2013 in a positive light. <\/strong>For example, parents should say: \u201cYou get to go to bed,\u201d instead \u201cYou have to go to bed.\u201d Reinforce to children that sleep is good for all of us. It helps them be a better student, better athlete, better sibling, better friend \u2013 and it helps prevent them from becoming ill.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose non-electronic, pre-sleep activities to encourage sufficient sleep. <\/strong>It\u2019s not recommended that a child\u2019s bedroom have a TV.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es?p=28563\">Electronics<\/a>, especially in the bedroom, interfere with sleep, compromise sleep quality and encroach upon a child\u2019s total sleep time. This is backed up with a study published in the medical journal\u00a0<em>Pediatrics<\/em>. It said that screen time was associated with a later sleep onset.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep it clean. <\/strong>Just like adults, children will sleep better in an environment will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/clutter-sleep-3595\">minimal clutter<\/a>. Encourage youngsters to keep their bedrooms tidy. Make sure that\u2019s a clear path to avoid any nighttime falls or mishaps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invest in a high quality, supportive mattress for your child. <\/strong>Allow older children to participate in their sleep health by getting involved in their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/comprar\">mattress selection process<\/a>.
