Do you anticipate long, comfy nights snuggled under quilts but equally dread peeling back the covers, putting your feet on the cold floor in the morning? While we experience this tragic emersion from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/prep-mattress-winter-1648\">comfy cocoon of our beds<\/a>\u00a0on a daily basis, there\u2019s a little guy named Phil who\u2019s forced to face this terrible shock on one special winter morning each year.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to Groundhog Day \u2013 Phil\u2019s big day. Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary is the most widely known groundhog who gets yanked from his hibernation every February 2<sup>nd<\/sup> to predict how much longer we\u2019ll have to brave winter. Groundhog Day began in Europe as Candlemas Day and was brought to America by the Germans who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>When Phil emerges from his burrow on February 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, if he sees his shadow, we\u2019ll be forced to suffer the elements of winter for 6 more weeks \u2013 burr! If Phil doesn\u2019t see his shadow, the glory of spring will be blessed upon us early. We\u2019re secretly hoping Phil never sees his shadow again.<\/p>\n<p>But how well do we really know Phil? We pull him from his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/sleep-hack-habits\">sound slumber<\/a>\u00a0and ask for his wise weather prediction yearly, it\u2019s only right we take the time to know a little more about the guy.<\/p>\n<h2>Get to know Punxsutawney Phil<\/h2>\n<p>While Pennsylvania\u2019s Punxsutawney Phil is the most widely known groundhog, Phil has family around the country who celebrate with him every February 2<sup>nd<\/sup>. General Beauregard Lee predicts how long Georgia will experience winter and over in Ohio Buckeye Chuck holds the position of predictor.<\/p>\n<p>Phil also has friends in high places. In 1986 Phil met up with President Ronald Regan and in 1995 he was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. Good ol\u2019 Phil is also an inspiration to Hollywood. Who can forget the 1993 classic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/reasons-ditch-netflix-sleep-2465\">movie<\/a>\u00a0Groundhog Day starring the legendary Bill Murray? And if you haven\u2019t seen this movie, then your homework is to go watch it today. You can thank us tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The animal rights group PETA calls for Phil\u2019s retirement and, if they get their way, perhaps Phil will relocate to a warm sunny climate where he isn\u2019t forced to predict the weather, and maybe even take up golf. PETA suggests using a robotic groundhog to replace Phil.<\/p>\n<p>What do you have in store for us this year Phil? Will we all be wearing our winter coats longer than we hope?<\/p>\n<h2>How to sleep better through the winter \u2013 and the spring too\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>If Phil predicts a longer winter, we need to prepare ourselves for sleep during the extended chill.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Set the mood for slumber<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Make your room dark before you head to bed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/light-sleep-9955\">Turn off lights <\/a>and electronics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleep in a clean and pleasant environment<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Keep your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/clutter-sleep-3595\">room tid<\/a>y before bed to help you focus on slumber.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get the room temperature right<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/temperature-sleep-circadian-rhythm\">Set your bedroom temperature<\/a> before you climb into bed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/clothing-sleep-6073\">Best sleep temperature <\/a>is between 65-72 F (18-21C).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid interruptions<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Put your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es?p=28503\">phone<\/a> on silent, use ear plugs if you sleep with a noisy partner and invest in an <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/restful-sleep-sleep-mask-earplugs-9375\">eye mask<\/a> to help eliminate light and movement distractions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose the right bed and bedding<\/strong>. Having a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/mattresses-es\/how-to-buy-the-world-s-best-mattress\">supportive mattress <\/a>is essential to a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wind down and relax before bed<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Build in buffer time before bedtime where you stop using your electronics, begin your\u00a0night time routine\u00a0and get your mind and body prepped for dreaming.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spend enough time in bed<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Most adults need an average of 8 hours sleep every night. Limit your time in bed to no more than 8 \u00bd hours. If you take longer to fall asleep, factor that into your sleep time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know what to avoid<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Alcohol can disrupt your sleep during the night.
