It sounds like the perfect ending to our <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/halloween-treats-wreck-sleep-2547?lang=es\">Halloween shenanigans<\/a> or candy comas, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/coping-daylight-saving-time-3691\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">time change<\/a> of any kind can be jarring on the body.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve hung up our Halloween costumes and are ready to investigate daylight savings time and what we can do to not \u201cfall\u201d into an autumn slump.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why do we have daylight savings?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11140\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"fall back one hour\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-1050x700.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FallBack-2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>If you live in an area where there\u2019s a wide shift in weather and daylight hours between summer and winter, your experience of the end of daylight savings will be a shift in seasons. Moving the clock backward in the fall reduces daylight in the evening by an hour, which means the sun will rise earlier in the morning (for a little while at least). When the time change began, it was hoped this shift would allow labors to be finished their workday at a more reasonable hour of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Daylight savings time was enacted on March 19, 1918 \u2013 but was unpopular due to factory workers waking up earlier and going to bed earlier. For years, it was inconsistent across the country as each state was given the option of whether to participate or not. Can you imagine the confusion, especially as a traveler? Long story short, due to the chaos, Congress got together in 1966 and implemented daylight savings time would occur on the last Sunday in October across the entire nation.<\/p>\n<p>But why do we change the clocks at 2 a.m.?<\/p>\n<p>The thinking goes \u2013 it\u2019s late enough that most people would be home sleeping, with few public places affected by the change. In addition, changing the time well after midnight prevented the date from switching to yesterday. It would be confusing to go back to the previous day just to end it an hour later.<\/p>\n<p>In modern times, excitement ensues in the fall when bars stay open an extra hour due to the change. A few years ago California passed a law that bars must close at 1:59 a.m. and therefore avoid that extra hour of serving drinks.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11139\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/time-change-2018-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"clock\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>Keep your body clock on time<\/h2>\n<p>Your body clock is a cluster of neurons deep inside your brain, generating rhythms, known as the sleep-wake-cycle. If your body clock is tuned to waking up with the sunlight, you\u2019re going to benefit. \u201cThe body needs a signal every day to reset it,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/tips-fall-back-daylight-saving-time-2014\/story?id=26602222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Alfred Lewy<\/a> from Oregon University. Sunlight is the signal because it shines through the eyes and corrects the sleep cycle.<\/p>\n<p>After a time change (or <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/eat-sleep-travel?lang=es\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traveling across time zones<\/a>) the body adjusts on its own after a few days. Below are several ways to help speed up the adjustment and reduce the pain along the way. Trust us, your body will welcome any help easing the pain of this weekend&#8217;s time change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Wake up at your normal time Sunday morning<\/strong> \u2013 Many people use the extra hour as an excuse to continue nighttime festivities and sleep in. Sleeping through Sunday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/early-riser?lang=es\">early sunlight<\/a> can leave you feeling out of sync for the start of the week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat well and exercise<\/strong> \u2013 An <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/exercise-sleep-you-7893\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">active lifestyle<\/a> and healthy diet can do wonders for your sleep. Eat a hearty breakfast and grab the dog for a neighborhood stroll. Your body will stay in tune and continue its normal routine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get a good night\u2019s sleep on Sunday night<\/strong> \u2013 Use Sunday night to turn your room into a <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es?p=28503\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleep zone<\/a>. Shut down your gadgets and sleep. Plain and simple. Your body will be ready to conquer Monday morning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know your body will adjust<\/strong> \u2013 It may take a few nights to feel 100% normal but fear not. Your body will get into the habit of the new light-dark cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Daylight savings time fun facts<\/h2>\n<p>There are several states and territories that don\u2019t participate in daylight savings. These include \u2013 Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27% of Americans claim DST makes them early for work or an appointment<\/li>\n<li>The idea of DST was thought of by Benjamin Franklin \u2013 years before being enacted<\/li>\n<li>Some countries refer to daylight savings time as \u201csummer\u201d such as Australia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do you manage falling back into the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/blog\/prepare-daylight-saving-time-change-1593\">daylight saving time<\/a>?
