When it comes to advice on how to get your best sleep, some of what we\u2019ve read online has us scratching our heads in disbelief. Though perhaps well-intentioned, some advice simply doesn\u2019t pass the tried-and-true common-sense test. We asked some experts for the worst advice they\u2019ve heard \u2013 tips and tricks that should be ignored. These nuggets definitely qualify for the bad sleep advice hall of fame.<\/p>\n<h2>Just say no to bad sleep advice!<\/h2>\n<p><strong><strong><strong><strong>1. Dispose of excess energy by exercising right before bedtime. <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>While there might be some twisted logic to this, it doesn\u2019t hold true. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es?p=28564\">Exercise is great<\/a> at some point in the evening, and it can help you sleep better,\u201d says Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert. \u201cBut just like eating supper, it should be done in a timely manner. By the time you get to bed, you should already be past the post-exercise rush and ready for genuine well-deserved rest.\u201d In other words, it\u2019s time to wind down, not up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Trouble sleeping? Take a pill.\u00a0 <\/strong>It might be tempting to reach for a <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleeping-pills-safe-2546\">sleeping pill<\/a> to help you get the rest you need. It\u2019s a quick and easy solution, right? But it\u2019s not a good idea, according to Backe. For several nights, even consecutive ones, pills might be an option, but as a part of your ongoing sleep routine? Nope. It\u2019s not a good way to go about getting sleep. There are long-term issues around dependency and many users experience morning grogginess, which can impair cognitive skills, affect motor skills and your ability to drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Get to bed early for a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/strong>\u00a0Some experts say you should head to be early to get adequate rest, but if that\u2019s contrary to what your body is comfortable with, then skip it. <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/sleep-experts-best-advice-insomnia-384765\">Set a bedtime<\/a> that allows you to fit in enough hours of sleep. \u201cTo be clear, this one is probably true sometimes,\u201d says Backe. Getting to bed early can indeed be very beneficial when you feel tired. What you want to avoid is those times when you\u2019re simply laying in bed wide awake. The key is don\u2019t force something that\u2019s not there. Try to stick to pre-determined bedtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Down a nightcap. <\/strong>Sipping <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/healthy-new-years-resolutions-2018\">an alcoholic drink<\/a> before bed might sound like it makes sense, since it acts as a tension reliever and is mildly sedating. But it\u2019s not going to work. Though you might fall asleep quicker, its effects continue into the night and disrupt your sleep. Alcohol may cause your sleep to be lighter and increase chances of interruptions during the night. Not to mention, alcohol is very dehydrating and you\u2019ll wake up not feeling not so ready to seize the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-19618\" src=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29-do-not-disturb.jpg\" alt=\"Turn Your Bedroom into a Hotel Room\" width=\"200\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29-do-not-disturb.jpg 296w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29-do-not-disturb-147x300.jpg 147w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29-do-not-disturb-196x400.jpg 196w, https:\/\/restonic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29-do-not-disturb-150x307.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>5. Must get X hours of sleep<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cOne of the myths I often hear is that there is a right sleep pattern and a wrong one,\u201d says Dr. Irina Zhdanova, a sleep and circadian clock expert. \u201cThis includes ideas on how many hours of sleep a person needs, how much time it should take to fall asleep, or with the advent of wearable sleep gadgets, how much deep or light sleep is required.\u201d In reality, <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/prevent-heart-disease-sleep-2483\">sleep needs<\/a> are highly individualized and dependent on multiple factors. Every approach to sleep requires personalization. \u201cThe best comparison I provide is with food intake,\u201d she adds. The same diet might keep one person slim, while causing another to be obese. A reasonable number of hours to sleep in a 24-hour period will never be the same for two individuals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Watch TV until you fall asleep. <\/strong>Nodding off to Jimmy Fallon or your favorite sitcom rerun may seem comforting, but it actually disrupts your sleep patterns, according to Karen Azeez, certified health coach and author of\u00a0 The Kindfulness Solution. Even after you turn off your TV, all those <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/light-sleep-technology\">power lights<\/a> are like little lasers burning through your eyelids, keeping your room from being sufficiently dark. Follow the golden rule. Leave the TV in another room and keep the bedroom for sleep and sex only.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Take a cold shower. <\/strong>The rationale behind this is that you\u2019ll bring down your body temperature, which is helpful for sleeping. Not only is it unpleasant, unless you are in the midst of steamy summer heatwave, it will shock your system into alertness. A better option is a warm bath. It\u2019s soothing and more relaxing than a chilly blast. When it comes to cool, apply that to the <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/better-sleep-es\/sleep-athlete-2547\">temperature of your bedroom<\/a>. The sweet spot , according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/the-ideal-bedroom\/\">Better Sleep Council<\/a>, is 65 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Sleep with a slice of wedding cake under your pillow. <\/strong>Though the practice has been touted as a means for single women to dream about their future husbands, it\u2019s just silly for many reasons. You can\u2019t predetermine the content of your dreams and, more importantly, who wants a sticky, messy pillow? Eat your cake as an afternoon snack instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Go naked in bed. <\/strong>\u00a0Just 17% of Americans head to bed in their birthday suits. If you\u2019re in that group, you\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/restonic.com\/es\/blog-es\/6-scientific-reasons-sleep-naked-7832\">happy in your nakedness<\/a> and sleep well. If that\u2019s not your thing, you\u2019re unlikely to feel good foregoing your jammies.
